Welcome to another episode of C Sharp Corner videos
0:05
In this video, I am going to talk about how to be confident when going for a technical interview
0:14
My name is Mahesh Chand, I am the founder of C Sharp Corner
0:19
So let's talk about the technical interview and when you are going for an interview, I
0:23
know we are we have this little fear and in this video my goal is to give you
0:31
some tips and talk about some things that will help you overcome that fear and
0:36
when you are going for the interview you will feel more confident and keep in
0:40
mind some of those are my personal tips I learned over years during my 25 years
0:47
of this software development in IT carrier I've learned these tips and
0:51
they have helped me. So hopefully some of these will help you. So before going for
0:57
an interview make sure you prepare and these are few simple tips right here
1:02
Make sure you learn about the company. What the company is, what is their
1:08
website, what they do, what kind of job you're going for and who is the person
1:13
that is interviewing you. That's very important and sometimes if you're not
1:18
sure you can even ask when you scheduled the interview you can ask oh what kind of
1:23
room is it how many people are in the room and who are they so what it does is
1:29
that you don't see any surprises when you go to a room and last thing you want
1:34
to see is you go for an interview and you see these five people and you just
1:40
pretend like oh shoot I'm not ready for this Make sure you bring a copy of your latest resume
1:50
This should be probably the same resume you have sent to the company before
1:55
Be before time, a little bit before time. What happens is, if you are going, you know, sometimes you go to this, you know, big building
2:05
There's parking issues. There's always, you may have to walk to the office from parking
2:11
It may take some time. just check check your you know make sure where you're parking the car how far it's going to we
2:19
you know take you walk from there for giving example sometimes I go to these meetings like
2:26
in New York especially in New York and LA if I'm there it's even the parking may take just half an
2:33
hour and in you know sometimes walking is half an hour so you make sure you have enough time for
2:38
that. And the last point here is dress to impress but make sure you are
2:43
comfortable, make sure you see something is not bothering you, make sure you
2:48
don't wear a watch that's giving you itchy in your hand and you keep looking
2:52
at it. So just be yourself don't you know. So let's look at let's talk about some
2:57
of these tips which are going to make you more confident. Before I talk about
3:04
about some of the tips let's talk about that what kind what is that fear why we fear you know either
3:09
interviewing or talking to somebody or you know and if you really think about that the fear is
3:19
actually fear of failure you nobody wants to be you know be fail you know you don't want to fail
3:28
in whatever either it's exam or interview so same thing you when you think of the fear when you're
3:33
going for an interview, somewhere, somehow deep down you are thinking that, oh shoot, what will they ask
3:40
Oh do I know that question answer Oh am I smart enough Do I have enough knowledge Or what if they don select me What if I don get a job So first thing you want to do is think of that Listen I going for this interview
4:00
I'm going to try my best. And if I don't get the job, it's okay. If they don't select me
4:08
it's okay they must have their own reason but I'm going to give my best shot it does not mean that
4:16
you don't prepare obviously you have to prepare obviously you have to be ready for the interview
4:21
obviously you have to review things you have to look at your past projects and at least put in
4:26
your head that what are you going to talk about them but just be ready for failure it's okay to
4:32
it's okay to fail because you you know you gave your best shot
4:37
now you go to this room and you are you know in front of these people they're interviewing you it
4:47
could be one person it could be multiple people when you talk to them your goal should be you
4:54
got to practice and be a storyteller okay everybody likes stories storytellers are
5:03
interesting conversation make it conversational and make sure you prepare for that and practice it and how do you practice it well make up your questions
5:13
get in your room get in front of mirror in your bathroom and what talk to talk
5:23
to yourself and watch yourself your expressions your record yourself on your
5:29
phone and listen to yourself what you're saying this will actually help you okay
5:35
sometimes you will realize that oh I should not have said that I should correct
5:39
that and then go and repeat and fix that and practice it again that will help
5:46
um one of the biggest fear we have is that when we try to lie when we try to think put something
5:55
on our resume that who we don't know about or we are not sure what it means or we have not done
6:02
that but we so this is biggest and most important point i tell young guys especially that don't put
6:10
anything on your resume just be who you are put post all the you know put all the projects and
6:16
skills which you really know and be authentic who you are. Just don't try to be somebody who you are
6:22
not. If you have not done something, I know in interviews sometimes they will ask questions about
6:28
which you have not done before. Don't try to make things up. They know they are more experienced than
6:34
you are. They have been through what you're going through. So don't make things up. That's actually
6:40
going to make it worse. For example, if they ask about some syntax in a C-sharp programming
6:47
language, let's say yield operator and you have not used real operator and you don't know what it
6:52
is, just say, I don't know, I've never used this before. It's that simple and it's okay to not know
7:00
You cannot know everything. We can't, it's just too much, right? So it's okay to be, you know
7:10
not know some things. To the point, so sometimes in an interview
7:20
you know, I will ask, tell me about yourself and somebody if you they just keep going keep going keep going for 10 minutes and telling their whole history
7:29
whole life, their parents, their family, their background and so on so on
7:33
Don try to be that person keep it short Yeah just be like few lines You know if I say who you are and tell me about yourself just name what kind of you know degree you have
7:49
what kind of projects you have done and experienced and that's about it. If I'm an interviewer and I have more interest in asking about your family background
7:58
or what you ate this morning in breakfast, I will ask that
8:02
So keep it short. And when you are talking to interviewers in the room, read their
8:13
language. Body language is very important. If somebody start looking around, looking
8:18
at their phone or they are yawning or they are, you can tell they are not paying
8:23
attention that means you're boring so you need to change that to stop we all
8:35
have our strengths and weaknesses you need to know what is your strengths and
8:41
what is your weakness and during the storytelling time when you are telling
8:48
them a story oh tell me about yourself and tell me what your projects what kind
8:52
projects have you done. So let's say if you have done five projects and I'm sure one of the projects
8:57
you are really good at it. Your goal should be talk more about that project and even during the
9:03
project talk about the things you have done the best and you know the best. Don't talk about the
9:09
things which other members have done. Don't try to be a hero and tell that you have done everything
9:15
in the project and you know everything unless you have done it already that's fine but goal is that
9:20
during the conversation if somebody's asking you okay tell me about yourself or tell me about your
9:26
last project you say oh in last project we have six people worked on it we had one designer
9:32
one architect and four developers I was one of the developers and my goal was I worked on a
9:39
a service that sent automatic emails and newsletters and during that I scheduled it I created a job in
9:47
SQL server and then talk more about the things which you have done and the point here is that
9:53
more you talk about those things more they listen about it they will ask more questions about that
9:59
and you will be more confident because you have done that work. The problem comes is your you know
10:06
problem comes is when you talk about the things which you don't know and you try to make things
10:11
up. That's the problem. So don't go that side. And from the interview, learn that, okay, what they
10:20
ask you, which you don't know, what is your weakness? And they'll go home and improve on that
10:25
and learn about it. Don't complain. Don't complain about anybody, period. So one of my favorite
10:39
question I ask is that why do you want to leave your current company? Some will say you know I
10:46
oh it's not enough you know money I need better salary or I don't like my project. Those are that's
10:53
fine you can say I'm not learning I'm not growing that's actually right answer that
10:59
but some people they just complain that oh I don't like my boss he was too bossy oh my boss
11:05
was giving me too much work. Oh, this I have to be work late and come early all those things
11:12
That's life, right? You can't complain about those. It's up to you if you are in a company and
11:20
they making you work a lot more than regular hours You know there so many jobs out there Just go find and stop complaining and just go out there and find you know the job you like the company you like the boss you like so if I an
11:35
interviewer I don't want to hear that you are you are not happy at your
11:41
previous company because you didn't like some person you didn't like your boss you didn't like your co-workers or you didn't like the company choose growth
11:51
Growth is a very big word but in general growth can be small and big so when you are looking for your new company make sure you look for something and again this is my personal opinion and again your choice may be different you know depends on what your personal preference and choice is
12:11
For example, if you are in need of money and some companies offering a lot more salary but less growth and you need money, maybe that's where you want to choose right now
12:23
But it may change later. But if I have to tell somebody what I would do is I would pick a company where I would grow more
12:32
I would learn more. I get a lot of work where I can't handle. That's my mindset
12:37
I don't like companies and I work on several companies I don't like where there was no work
12:44
what happens is if you go to these companies where there's less work or no work or nobody's
12:50
asking you what work you're doing is becomes that you start becoming lazy and that means your habits
12:56
are changing that means either in life slowly you are going to stop adapting these bad habits and
13:03
That's the last thing you want. You want the company where they give you a lot of work
13:07
You want the company they challenge you. You want the company they give you the problems
13:11
where you are actually learning to solve those problems. So that's the company you want
13:16
That's the projects you want. Where you can learn more and solve more problems
13:23
And what happens once you start doing that, it becomes your habit. Once anything becomes your habit you are used to
13:30
that's really where you want to be in a career, in life. So these are my 10 favorite interview questions
13:38
These are non-technical. Obviously, I am talking about non-technical here. So if I am interviewing somebody, that's really how I start with
13:46
Why don't you tell me about yourself? What kind of, you know, why are you interested in this position or company
13:54
Tell me something you are most proud of. So here you want to talk about some problem you have solved which you think is pretty
14:02
good and you're proud of. What is your greatest weakness? Make sure you have some weakness
14:09
We all do. Whatever it could be. What are your strengths? Why do you want to leave your current
14:17
employer or current company and current job? This is exactly my question I ask all the time
14:23
This is another. Where do you want to see yourself in the next five years? This tells me that
14:28
how far you see and what you want to be and have you even thought about you know a little longer
14:36
term than than today or tomorrow and why should I hire you you got to tell me the reason why should
14:43
I hire you right you should not hire somebody else so again there's two other questions why
14:50
did you like what did you like about your previous current position right or and also during my
14:57
interview I don't really have predefined questions I just ask you and look ask your
15:04
current projects you have worked on and then I really drill through those projects and what kind
15:08
of work have you done there so that's all folks hopefully you found this little bit useful
15:15
feedback comments are most welcome thank you
